Why Fall Golf Is Pure Magic
I am SO ready for fall golf! Who’s with me? I have been refreshing the forecast constantly lately because I can hardly contain my excitement each day at how perfect the weather has been. We are squarely in prime golf season, and I have thoughts. Big thoughts.
I know some of you might be thinking, “Mary, isn’t golf season ending?” But hear me out – fall golf is actually THE BEST golf. Hands down, no contest, the absolute best time to be on the course. And I’m going to tell you exactly why.
Why I’m in love with fall golf
The Ground Game Changes Everything
Can we talk about how amazing firm, dry fairways are? When that summer humidity finally breaks and we get these crisp, dry conditions, your golf ball just ROLLS. I’m talking about picking up an extra 20-30 yards of distance just because the ground is cooperating with you instead of swallowing your ball like quicksand. It’s like the golf course is finally on your team!
The Weather Sweet Spot
This is it, ladies – the Goldilocks zone of golf weather. It’s sunny but not blazing hot. Cool enough that you’re not sweating through your cute golf top by the 3rd hole, but warm enough that you’re not shivering over putts. You know that perfect temperature where you can throw on a cozy pullover and actually feel comfortable for 18 holes? That’s fall golf magic right there.
You’re Playing Your Best Golf
Here’s something I’ve noticed over the past few years: September and early October is when I’m playing my most confident golf. Think about it – you’ve been swinging all summer, you’re fully warmed up for the season, your swing feels dialed-in, and your short game has had months to develop. Plus, there’s something about the crisp air that just makes everything feel more focused. I swear I read putts better when it’s 65 degrees and sunny.
The Course Looks Like a Postcard
Those jewel tones starting to peek through the green? The way the light hits differently in the late afternoon? Fall golf courses are just *chef’s kiss*. It’s like playing golf inside a green, orange, yellow & red dreamland!
But Let’s Be Real About the Challenges
White Golf Balls Only Zone
PSA: Put away the pink golf balls, friends. I learned this the hard way last year when I spent half my round searching through leaves for my bright pink Callaway Supersofts. The leaves and the pink balls? They’re basically the same color family. White balls only from here until spring – trust me on this one.
Physics Is Not Our Friend
In cooler temps, the golf ball doesn’t travel as far. It’s just science, and it’s annoying science at that. So don’t beat yourself up when your drives feel shorter than they did in July. Consider clubbing up for certain shots, and remember that your playing partners are dealing with the same thing.
Course Conditions Get Tricky
The whole course will be firmer (which we love for roll), but courses might also start protecting certain areas since grass grows slower and recovers slower this time of year. Expect some “cart path only” situations and maybe some temporary greens here and there.
Less daylight, tight evening rounds
Playing a quick 9 after work is rare to non-existent unless you are getting out of work EARLY. The long shadows on the golf course can make it even harder to find your golf ball, even in plain sight.
Fall Golf Pro Tips
Embrace the Leaf Rule
Most courses will implement a local “leaf rule” where you get a free drop if you lose your ball in a pile of leaves. It’s not an official USGA rule, but it’s a sanity-saver when the leaves start falling. Ask at the pro shop what their specific policy is.
Consider Walking
This might be the perfect time to ditch the cart and walk the course. The weather is ideal for it, you’ll stay warmer, and honestly? There’s something magical about walking a golf course in the fall. Rent a push cart if carrying your bag isn’t your thing.
Adjust Your Expectations (In the Best Way)
Fall golf is different. The conditions are firmer, the light is different, and your ball flight might change slightly. Instead of fighting it, lean into it. Use that extra roll to your advantage. Enjoy the fact that your ball isn’t plugging in soft fairways.
Let’s Make This Fall Count
I’m making a prediction: this fall is going to be your best golf season yet. You’re more experienced than you were last year, you’ve got months of practice under your belt, and you’re about to play in the most gorgeous conditions Mother Nature has to offer.
So tell me – what are your fall golf goals? Are you finally going to break that scoring barrier you’ve been chasing? Join a league? Play that course you’ve been wanting to try?
