Inside Our Winter Indoor Golf League: 10 Weeks, 3 Divisions, and Countless Memories
"My old Heavenwood. Only club I have never replaced over the years. Not sure what type hybrid it really is but kinda like a security blanket as I'm starting to golf again."
That text popped up in our league WhatsApp group, and I realized: this is exactly what makes our winter indoor golf league so special. We're not just keeping clubs in our hands during Cincinnati's brutal winter – we're sharing our golf stories, our security blankets, and our journeys back to a game we love.
We're eight weeks into our 10-week season at Swing Fit Golf Club in Blue Ash, OH, and what started as a way to keep a club in our hands during winter has turned into something so much more.
Who Shows Up to Play Golf Indoors on a Wednesday Night in February?
All league members get access to a WhatsApp group chat. When our WhatsApp group started filling up in early January, I asked everyone to introduce themselves. The responses gave me goosebumps.
Some women joined with minimal golf experience – just a handful of group lessons and maybe a scramble or two – admitting they felt intimidated but excited for some weeknight fun and learning. Others confessed they'd been "roped into this" by friends and considered themselves hack golfers who'd only played in scrambles, hoping to have fun first and improve as a bonus.
And then Amanda stepped in with exactly what I'd hoped to see: "I was too and I took a chance and joined without knowing anyone at all. I can attest that you will be welcomed with smiles and support from a great group of ladies."
This is who joins an indoor golf league: women who started playing during COVID and never wanted to stop. Attorneys and campus recruiting managers and OBGYN residents who work full-time and somehow still carve out Wednesday nights for golf. Moms with teenagers learning to drive. Women returning to golf after years away. Self-described "hack golfers" and "seasoned beginners" (I love that phrase, Liz) who just want to get better.
Ann summed it up perfectly: "I am more on the beginner side of golfing but regularly go to driving ranges and play Par 3 courses. I love golf because I could be outside, have a beer and I love driving a golf cart!."
If you see yourself in any of these women – congratulations, you belong in a golf league.
Three Divisions, One Mission
After our first two weeks playing easier courses (Shooting Star in Wyoming and Clear Creek Tahoe in Nevada), we split into three divisions to better match everyone's skill levels:
Long Reign (~2,700 yards) – These women are playing championship-level courses
Sweet Swing (~2,200 yards) – Our middle division balancing challenge and confidence
Royal Start (1,500-2,000 yards) – Shorter courses perfect for building skills
The division names? Yeah, we workshopped those. They play off our Queen City Links Ladies theme, and I love how they make it obvious which is which without creating any hierarchy. Everyone's working toward the same goal: getting better at golf.
Since the split, Long Reign and Sweet Swing have tackled some serious courses – Schloss Pichlarn, Overbrook Golf Club, Ballyneety, Silo Ridge, and even St Andrew's Old Course. Meanwhile, Royal Start has been conquering Leon De Montana, Seve GV Rotterdam, Senoja Valley, Pinehurst Cradle, and Dalebrook Forest.
The TrackMan Learning Curve (AKA Technology Snafus That Keep Us Humble)
Let's talk about the elephant in the simulator bay: TrackMan technology can be... temperamental at times.
Week one started with login problems. Then we discovered that if you don't specify your gender in the app, TrackMan makes some interesting assumptions. One player found herself teeing off about 150 yards behind everyone else because the system defaults gender to male, and therefore tees further back. Turns out that detail matters!
But here's what I love: every technological hiccup became a bonding moment. When someone's ball disappears into some bizarre place on the virtual course, we figured out the "pickup" button together. When the water hazards seemed excessive ("too much water on some of these courses!" was the common sentiment one week), we laughed and adjusted our strategy.
And yes, lost balls DO happen occasionally at the simulator when a shot goes really wonky. Which might be the most ironic thing about indoor golf.
The Moments That Make It Worth It
When someone holes out from off the green, TrackMan does this cute little celebration animation. I've watched it happen twice so far this season, and the shrieking and high-fives that followed were absolutely worth the price of admission.
We've celebrated together at the Cincinnati Golf Expo, where Terri scored discounts on her GHIN handicap renewal, found deals on courses to play, and snagged clothes at 50% off. ("Thanks Mary!" she texted to the group. Those two words made my entire week.)
We've learned each other's favorite clubs. Terri's Heavenwood – "the only club I still have from years ago... kinda like a security blanket as I'm starting to golf again" – has become legendary in our group. Amanda's go-to is her 7 iron. Laura's answer? "Depends on the day" which might be the most honest golf response ever.
Someone left her Cincinnati Bearcats head cover at week 4, and Amy immediately recognized it. ("It's Andrea's 👍") These are the small moments that build community.
We've discovered we frequent the same courses and driving ranges. We shared our favorite tracks and learned who lives nearby whom. Some women are already making plans… “Four Bridges is such a fun course! Just say when, and I'll meet you for a round anytime :)"
That right there is why you join a league.
Why Indoor Golf in the Off-Season Changes Everything
Here's what I wish I'd known when I started playing golf: the off-season is where you either maintain your progress or lose it entirely.
When you play a seasonal sport, you lose skills from lack of practice. It's inevitable. But playing the simulator helps you maintain muscle memory so you don't lose quite as much while waiting to get back out there in spring.
One woman, who's in her second winter league with us, put it perfectly: "I love how it keeps me swinging throughout the winter!"
The simulator gives you something real golf courses can't:
No weather excuses – We've played through Cincinnati snowstorms and freezing temps without missing a week
Faster pace – We complete 9 holes in about 1.5-2 hours instead of 2.5-3+ hours on a real course
Course variety – We've "traveled" to Wyoming, Nevada, Hawaii, Colorado, Austria, Ireland, and Scotland without leaving Blue Ash
Adjustable difficulty – Pick your tees, turn off the wind, choose par 3s if you want
Zero pressure – No groups behind you, no lost balls in the woods, no stress about pace of play
But here's the real benefit: consistency.
Every Wednesday at 7 PM, we show up. Through holidays, snowstorms, busy work weeks, and life chaos. We show up because we've committed to ourselves and to each other.
That's the magic of a league.
The Hard Work That Sets Up Spring Success
I'm not going to lie – we've had some challenging rounds. Some nights the simulator loves us, and some nights it keeps us humble.
But as I told the group in our mid-season email: the work we're putting in right now – even on those tough nights – is what's going to springboard us into an incredible 2026 golf season.
Every swing you take, every course you play, every time you show up on a Wednesday night when it's cold and dark outside? That's you investing in your future golf game.
And when we're out on real courses this spring with the sun shining and birds chirping, you're going to be SO glad you kept a club in your hand all winter long.
You Don't Have to Wait for Next Season
Reading this and thinking "I wish I'd joined"? Here's the best news: you don't have to wait until next winter to try the simulator.
You can book a bay at Swing Fit (or any of the dozen+ simulator facilities around Cincinnati) anytime. Looking for instruction? Swing Fit is hosting clinics on Sundays at 10AM and Wednesdays at 7PM. Grab a friend, bring snacks and drinks (they're BYOB), and experience what indoor golf is all about.
Not sure where to start? I created a complete guide to help you:

The simulator isn't just for serious golfers playing seven days a week. It's for beginners who want to build confidence. It's for intermediate players who want to maintain their skills year-round. It's for anyone who loves golf and doesn't want to wait until April to swing a club again.
As Brooke told the group when she joined: "I figured this was a much less intimidating way to get back into golf so I'm not chasing a ball all over a course."
She was right.
The Bottom Line
We've got a couple more weeks of Long Reign, Sweet Swing, and Royal Start division play. Three more chances to improve our games, share snacks (always bring snacks!), cheer each other on, and keep building toward the golfers we want to be this season.
Whether you're crushing it in your game or still working through some struggles, showing up is the hardest part. And if you've been waiting for the "right time" to start playing golf or join a league, I'm here to tell you: there is no right time.
There's only now.
The women in our winter league didn't wait until they were "good enough." They showed up nervous, intimidated, and uncertain – and they're getting better every single week because they committed to consistency over perfection.
You can too.
